Spine Crackers visit State Library

On Wednesday 7th June the Spine crackers travelled by train to Melbourne to the State Library of Victoria. Once at the Library students participated in a Research Skills workshop in the library’s onsite computer lab. The learning focus was for our students to become critical, creative and independent researchers, the workshop also included an introduction to the library’s onsite and online resources as well as advice on researching information via reliable websites.

YEAR 8 BOYS SOCCER

The Year 8 boys Soccer team did themselves proud last Tuesday 23rd May. With some of the students playing their first ever competitive games of soccer, they came up against a much experienced Bellarine Secondary College in their first match.Lara had a few chances but were not able to take them and Bellarine took a 2-0 win.

The boys bonded together well in their second game and some great defensive efforts were rewarded with a 0-0 draw against Oberon High School.

Music Soiree

Around two hundred parents and family members attended last week’s Music Soiree. Our Director of Music, Rebecca Newman, long time instrumental music teacher, Mark Bennett, and great Lara Secondary supporter and ex instrumental teacher, Lyn Spiteri , hosted the most outstanding musical evening ever presented at Lara Secondary College.

SENIOR & INTERMEDIATE GIRLS FOOTBALL

Both the Senior and Intermediate Girls Football Teams went out this week and represented the school at Ervin Reserve. Both teams won their two pool games and went into the grand finals. I am ecstatic to report that we are the GSSSA Champions at both age levels.

AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST MORNING TEA

On Thursday the 25th all staff gathered to celebrate Australia’s biggest morning tea. Staff members baked up a storm of delicious cakes and slices to help fundraise for the cancer council. Staff raised more than $228 for a fantastic cause.

Big Day Out - Year 7

Year 7 students enjoyed trialling what they had designed and constructed in their Sciences classes on Tuesday, as a part of the annual Big Day Out. This day promoted effective team work skills and developed an understanding in the physics of flight and projectile motion.

YEAR 8 ‘BAN THE BAG’ TASK

Recently the Year 8 students completed a Problem Based Learning task on the use of disposable plastic bags. Students studied the impact of plastic bags of the environment and ways to solve this world problem. They wrote letters to the managers of Coles and Woolworths supermarkets trying to persuade them to ‘Ban the Bag’. BE CREATIVE, FACSIMILE PAINTING TASK

YEAR 10 OUTDOOR EDUCATION (1)

Our Year 10 Outdoor Education students recently took on the challenge of hiking from Cape Otway to Lavers Hill along the Great Ocean Walk - with overnight stays at Aire River and Johanna Beach. All students participated admirably, demonstrating improving skills in teamwork, leadership and organisation, as well gaining an insight into trip planning, minimum impact hiking, camp cooking, weather considerations and risk management.
