These performances are open to the general public and this year the showcase was sold out with over 300 audience members attending.
The Shortcuts Short Play Festival at the Courthouse Youth Arts
A night of short, cutting-edge theatre. Shortcuts is a more experimental, original short play program for students in Years 10-12 allowing students to showcase their original ensemble performances in the style of Non-Naturalism.
The Melbourne Fringe Festival - Melbourne Fringe
This is the leading organisation for the independent arts in Victoria. It facilitates the presentation of contemporary work across all art forms. Their artistic program gives both emerging and established artists opportunities to gain diverse professional skills and present new work. In 2011, 16 Senior VCE Drama Lara Secondary College students participated in the Melbourne Fringe for a two-night, sold out season at Club Voltaire in North Melbourne.
This involvement has lead to other offers of performance opportunities - namely a season at the newly renovated Courthouse Youth Arts Theatre.
Whole School Productions
Be it Musicals or the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge, Lara Secondary College has delivered high quality performance opportunities available to all students, through an audition process, for the last eight years. In 2008 & 2011 the college participated in the Rock Eisteddfod challenge – the first year in the Open division, placing second and being promoted to premier division for 2011 where once again we were placed a close second at this elite level.
Since 2009, Lara Secondary College has produced four original whole school musicals most recently with Mullet the Musical in 2012 and Frankie the Musical in 2013. These original productions include high level student-involvement and collaboration in both the creation and presentation stages of production. All four productions have been performed in the Drama Theatre at Geelong Performing Arts Centre.
“Same Love” School's Tour - Geelong Region
This year the very talented year 12 Drama students have partnered with GASP - The Geelong Adolescent Sexuality Project - to tour their ensemble performance 'Same Love' originally created for the Take Over Festival in 2013. The performance tackles issues such as bullying, friendships, and the impact of homophobia in schools and was successful in receiving a prestigious grant in 2013.
Lara Secondary College has fast established itself as a provider of professional, high quality school productions and will continue to provide extensive performing arts opportunities in years to come.
