Lara Secondary College offers a vast array of interschool public speaking competitions with extensive training and preparation prior to the students competing. We have dedicated, specialist teachers and expert guest speakers that are on offer to guide the students.
We are proud to have had students who have won state titles in events such as the Lion Club Youth of the Year Public Speaking Quest.
Students aged between 15 and 18 are eligible to enter the Youth of the Year Quest. The Quest is a prestigious public speaking competition offered to students and has been in existence for more than 46 years. It boasts many high profile Australians amongst former entrants, including former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
This public speaking competition gives students an opportunity to experience an interview situation in a friendly atmosphere and a chance to practice public speaking skills in both an impromptu and a pre-prepared manner.
Lara Secondary College is also involved in the Wyndam Public Speaking Competition, again having students compete to state level.
WYNSPEAK is a community project jointly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing and the Hoppers Crossing Apex Club. The contest enables students, in both the junior years and senior years, to further develop Oral Presentation skills with two sections.
- Section 1 involves the delivery of a pre-prepared speech of five minutes duration. The topic for this speech is entirely up to the students and is written by them.
- Section 2 is an impromptu speech of two minutes based on an unknown topic. They are given the topic two minutes before they have to deliver the speech.
Lara Secondary College encourages public speaking to teach and develop the student's skills in constructing, delivering and enjoying the benefits of developing confidence in the public speaking arena.
