At Lara Secondary College, our students have the opportunity to study Indonesian as an additional language. In our LOTE program, students develop an understanding of Australia’s nearest neighbour and the world’s fourth most populous nation in Indonesia through classroom and experiential learning in the community – both in Australia and in Indonesia.
Indonesian is a compulsory subject for our students in Year 7 and 8, in which they learn to communicate about and through a number of engaging and relevant topics including their personal lives, the environment and food.
At the elective level from Years 9-12, students have the opportunity to further develop their language skills while gaining a deeper understanding of Indonesian culture and its importance in an increasingly globalised workforce. Students complete cooking classes where they cook Indonesian dishes, and attend excursions to the Indonesian Consulate in Melbourne to provide them opportunities to engage with the Indonesian diaspora in Victoria.
The elective level Indonesian program culminates in an opportunity for students to partake in our overseas study tour to Indonesia on a bi-annual basis, where students have the opportunity to undertake a homestay with a family from our Sister School at Sekolah Alam Cikeas, about 30km south from Indonesia’s largest city and former capital in Jakarta for one week and complete a range of cultural activities in Yogyakarta and Bali. The Indonesian program at Lara Secondary College is expanding and provides our students with a range of real-world, practical, and engaging experiences led by a passionate team.
