At Lara Secondary College we introduce year 8 students to the Wood Technology area. They learn how to use tools and equipment in a safe manner while developing skills to be creative and design simple projects. Students aren’t limited to using just wood in their projects because this is a materials-based subject, they can also use metal, plastic and textiles in this area.
At year 9 level the students complete a selection of smaller projects that range from a Trinket Box, acrylic Balance Bird and Spinner, Paper Tray with individual design, Mug Holder and Desk Top Organiser. These projects help students build their skills and develop knowledge to be able to design projects on their own.
Year 9 Electronics will be introduced in 2025 and will include basic mechanisms as part of the Systems unit of the subject. Students will explore how electronic systems play an important part of our every day lives.
At year 9 and 10 students can choose to pick the subject as an elective which will benefit them should they continue onto VCE – Product Design. This subject encompasses sustainability, ethics in design, cultural design, context in society along with reading, writing and numeracy which are all embedded into the theoretical components for each year level.
